Summer Events:

"WALDEN WEDNESDAYS" - WALDEN POND: CONCORD, MA

Looking for an open water venue? Like to swim with a group and have fun? Walden Wednesdays are a chance to get out from the city and enjoy the serenity and beauty of Thoreau's famous Walden Pond. Although spearheaded by members of the Cambridge Masters Swim Club (CMSC), any and all swimmers are welcome, regardless of affiliation. Attendees range from die-hard open water swimmers who are looking for a chance to train, to non-competitive swimmers who want to enjoy a cool dip in the idyllic setting. At summer's end, we also make a special outing to Woods Hole, Cape Cod to view the bioluminescent waters there and the glowing (but non-stinging) jelly fish. We also get together for several post-swim beers and an annual BBQ each year.

The swim schedule is every Wednesday, rain or shine, beginning Wed. June 15 and lasting through the end of September or whenever the Pond is deemed too cold. If the forecast looks threatening, call the Walden hotline to make sure the park is open before you drive out: 978-369-3254. We form carpools out to the Pond, departing from various Boston area locations around 5:45pm and meeting in front of the Walden guardhouse at 6:30pm. As the daylight begins to wane at the end of the summer, we often meet earlier to avoid getting locked out of the parking lot when the Pond closes early. Right now the parking lot is open until 8pm. Parking costs $5 and the lots fill up quickly, especially in good weather. It's highly recommended to purchase an annual pass for $35 to avoid waiting in line to pay each week.

Email waldenswimmers-subscribe@yahoogroups.com to join the group.

"NAHANT KNUCKLEHEADS" - NAHANT BEACH: NAHANT, MA

A committed group of open water enthusiasts meets every SUNDAY at 9 am in the DCR parking lot adjacent to the Tides restaurant at Nahant Beach for ocean swims that cover 2 - 4+ miles. The swims are held throughout the season until it is too cold, and will happen rain or shine unless the weather creates surface conditions or currents that are too dangerous. If you are interested in joining us, please send Jen Downing an email at Nahant_Knuckleheads-subscribe@yahoogroups.com .

Please note that the water temperature in Nahant varies from the mid 50's to 70's Fahrenheit. It is important to bring the necessary attire to safely swim at some of these temperatures (including wetsuits and brightly colored caps to provide extra visibility in the water). These swims are targeted for stronger swimmers who are comfortable swimming in open water conditions that can rapidly change without warning. The swims are not affiliated with any group and all participants must take responsibility for their liability and safety.

Directions: This is the address for the Dunkin Donuts at the entrance of the parking lot. Please use this for directions: 2 Wilson Road Nahant, MA 01908-1017. Parking costs $3 and it's highly recommended that return swimmers purchase a DCR season's pass to save money (same pass can be used at Walden Pond).

Holiday Events:

Every December, CMSC holds a Holiday Party at a local pub following the completion of the short-course meters championship meet at BU. Food and beverages are served. Coaches’ gifts are also presented and all team members are encouraged to attend.
